The main camp was made up of 18 barracks. Two of these were reserved for sick inmates. Another two were warehouses. One was a penal block, and another as the camp prison until 1939. After this year, a separate prison was built. The remaining twelve were primarily used for housing purposes (USHMM) A small men's camp is shown separate from the women's housing. The railroad station is set up right on the northern border of the camp.
Gas Chambers
Through witness testimonies from former prisoners and SS members, it has been proven that there was a gas chamber at Ravensbruck. Before these testimonies, the existence of the chamber was not proven because there are no remnants left of the building. The image to the left shows a rough sketch of the layout of the building. This chamber was located next to a crematorium, and witnesses claim there was a door specifically made to remove corpses. A two meter fence was built around the building so that the crime was hidden from the public. The chambers were used for ill prisoners who were not able to work and those who could not walk long distances before the camp's evacuation (The Gas Chamber).
